School is back in session for the students of Mar Vista High School, who recently returned from their two week spring break. Spring Break has been the subject of many movies because of its reputation for being a time for teenagers and college students to let loose and escape the daily grind of school. The students of Mar Vista took full advantage of this time, and used it to experience new and exciting things. Let’s take a look into where Mar Vista High (MVH) students went over Spring Break.
Senior, Kyle Hara took his Spring Break to the rainforest, visiting Costa Rica with his family. Typical of vacation, Hara enjoyed the sandy white beaches and tropical atmosphere. He said, “The most exciting part of the trip was going to the national park Manuel Antonio and seeing one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen. It had monkeys running all over it!”
Hara is a seasoned traveler, so he likes getting to know the cultures that he gets to see, especially through their food. “My favorite thing about traveling is definitely trying the new foods I’ve never had.”
He summed up his trip by saying, “When I was on the beaches I didn’t have a care in the world, I had zero stress.”
Another MVH senior, Baylee Conradi, kept it relatively close to home visiting northern California. More specifically, she was visiting her sister at University of California, Berkeley. She said that her sister’s apartment feels like home to her, so this vacation was easy and comfortable.
She said, “I stayed with her off campus with her roomates, and I even got to sit in on some of her classes.”
Conradi has lived in San Diego all her life, so taking an occasional trip is something she really values. “My favorite thing about traveling is that I get to experience life outside of my norm. San Diego is such a unique place, so when I travel I’m shocked by how different it is.”
Kiara and Gianna Alcarez are seniors at Mar Vista. They took their break to the city of lights, Las Vegas, Nevada. They stayed there for three days in the New York-New York Hotel. Kiara said, “It was exciting because it was our first time in Vegas. Luckily the weather was really nice. We got to see so many cool hotels like Caesars Palace, Bellagio, and Circus Circus. We also got to see famous shows like Cirque Du Soleil. We had a lot of fun.”
They also enjoyed visiting the Hershey’s and M&M stores.
Gianna added, “I love traveling because we get to get away from the city we’re used to and see different and interesting things.”
Spring Break brought myself, a Mar Vista senior, to the high seas, where my family and I cruised around the Caribbean stopping in St. Martin, Puerto Rico, and Haiti. I haven’t been on a family vacation in over a decade, so it was a really fun, and long awaited, experience.
In St. Martin my family and I participated in a bike tour. In Puerto Rico where we volunteered in the La Perla Community, and in Haiti we enjoyed the beach and the sun.
I think it’s important to travel to expose yourself to other places, people, and ways of life. It’s easy to feel trapped in a bubble in high school, having to see the same people and things everyday, so taking a trip somewhere new while you’re on break is a nice way to recharge.
Spring Break is the time to bring down stress levels and relax right before finals and AP testing, and we Mar Vista students did just that. From the rainforest, to the redwoods, to the high seas, to the deserts, many students went near and far. The end of the school year is getting closer, but it’s not quite over yet. Buckle down Mariners, finish strong!
